Portland Opera

Interim Artistic Director

2019–2021

Daniel joined Portland Opera as Interim Artistic Director at a time of renewal and growth for the company in the fall of 2019, and ended up spearheading the company’s artistic and production response to the Covid-19 pandemic until summer of 2021. His commitment to keep artists compensated and engaged resulted in the first ever virtual concert featuring soloists, orchestra, and chorus, various live-streamed recitals and productions showcasing the Resident Artists, as well as outdoor concerts. As part of the new strategic plan for the company, he broadened the repertoire selections and helped bolster the company’s connection to Portland’s robust community of artists and audiences.

As General Director Sue Dixon wrote upon hiring him, “[Daniel] has a proven commitment to the beauty and breadth of this amazing art form and brings a passionate and informed perspective to the challenges that our company faces. The future of Portland Opera will shine brighter as a result of his collaborations with us.”
